I’ve never tried a Yoga class, where should I begin?
A beginner class will introduce you to the basic terminology
and movement patterns. It is recommended that all new students
attend a beginning Yoga workshop held on the first Saturday
of each month. Proficiency in other movement/athletic activities
does not necessarily predict ability level in a Yoga class.
The ability to be flexible and achieve a variety of poses
does not necessarily mean that safe alignment is achieved.
Beginning classes introduce even the serious athlete or flexible
dancer to the specifics of Yoga. We can't stress enough how
important it is to start with a Beginner's Workshop and then
the Beginner's class.
What should I wear?
Wear either loose or form-fitting clothing so long as you
are comfortable, but be sure your movement is not hindered.
Baggy t-shirts and loose shorts tend to ride up – it is advisable
to layer tighter garments under looser ones. Remember to be
comfortable and able to move. Wear minimal jewelry if necessary.
Socks are acceptable for floor stretches, but can make standing
poses dangerous as they tend to slip. Do what moves you and
wear what you can move in!
What should I bring?
Bring a “sticky” mat.
What props should I use when I get to the studio?
When you get to the studio your teacher will tell you to
grab your wool blankets, one to two Yoga blocks, and a strap
or two.
What does Vinyasa mean?
Vinyasa Yoga is also known as "flow yoga" - it
is a style of yoga where the instructor flows from one pose
(asana) to the next using breath and visualization. You may
hold a pose to deepen your awareness, but you are not holding
static poses.
